Soon after the three months of summer retreat in Jetvana Vihara in
Sravasti, many Bikshus gathered in the refectory to make some robes
for the Buddha for his imminent departure on his propagation travels.
When Nandhika, a member of the Sakyamuni family, heard that the Buddha's
robes were almost ready and that he was going away to preach, he felt
very sad and came to see the Buddha.
As soon as Nandhika saw the Buddha, he said in misery:" Buddha!
I am getting old, and my health is deteriorating. My memory is so bad
now that I have forgotten all that you have taught. I know from the
other Bikshus that you are leaving soon on your travels. I feel really
miserable as I do not know when I will see the Buddha and the other
Bikshus again."
The Buddha thereby consoled him:" Nandhika! It is not important
whether you can see me or the other Bikshus. What you must remember
is to practise the five instances of bliss. At any time, be mindful
of the Buddha, the Dharma, the Sangha, the precepts and giving. Nandhika!
These are the five branches of concentration which should be practised
wherever you are and whatever you are doing."
Nandhika's worry was relieved after the Buddha's discourse, and he happily
left after having paid his homage.
